Gay Finch

Hall of Fame Class of 2004

Gay Finch (coach) – Gay grew-up in Grosse Point, Michigan, where she competed in tennis, field hockey, and basketball. She attended the University of Michigan, majoring in P.E. In 1974, Gay moved to Malibu, where she started teaching tennis to the neighborhood children and coordinating youth tournaments. Among her students were Rob and Chad Lowe, and Sean and Chris Penn. Gay moved to Santa Cruz in 1984, where she continued teaching youth tennis. Gay became the girls tennis coach at Aptos in 1986, at which time she started her annual summer tennis camps for kids. She also developed an inter-club junior tennis league. In 1990, Gay became a USPTA certified professional. At Aptos, Gay’s teams have won thirteen SCCAL team championships, and many, many more individual singles and doubles titles. Gay has been the SCCAL tennis representative for fourteen years, and she has been honored three-times as the USPTA Nor Cal High School Coach-of-the-Year. Gay was also honored as the USPTA Nor Cal Regional Director-of-the-Year in 2002, and she was recognized as the CCS Honor Coach in girls tennis in 1995. Gay was presented into the Hall by her husband Bill.
